Overview

Farm Camp at the Queens County Farm Museum allows young people (ages 4-14, or Rising Kindergarteners to Rising 8th Graders) the opportunity to explore the natural outdoor setting and take part in daily lessons about farm-centered activities provided by expert staff. Campers enjoy exciting and specialized activities such as Nature Walks, Farming, and Scavenger Hunts as well as traditional summer camp programming like Arts & Crafts, Sports, Theme Days and Games. Campers will also have the opportunity to swim weekly at Commonpoint Queens’ Tanenbaum Family Pool Facility just one mile down the road from the Queens County Farm Museum!

The Queens County Farm Museum’s history dates back to 1697; it occupies New York City’s largest remaining tract of undisturbed farmland. The farm encompasses a 47-acre parcel that is the longest continuously farmed site in New York State. The site includes historic farm buildings, a greenhouse complex, livestock, farm vehicles and implements, planting fields, an orchard and herb garden.

Farm staff offers 2 hours of farm-based educational programming daily as part of this camp. Campers enjoy opportunities to “play farmer,” learning about farm life and helping maintain the grounds by weeding and animal feeding on top of exploratory programs like culinary, planting, harvesting, art projects and other fun farm-y activities.

Here are some examples of activities from last summer:

  • painting with vegetables
  • nature walks collecting items to create nature collages
  • basil harvest and pesto preparation
  • building solar ovens to make smores and mini pizzas
  • cooking over our 18th century hearth
  • planting herbs and tomatoes
  • painting signs and rocks to decorate our children’s garden

We also offer opportunities in growing fields and gardens to learn where food comes from, help with weeding, harvesting, and preparing fresh produce for snacks.
